P2P
P2P, short form for peer-to-peer, is a distributed network architecture where participants' resources are available directly to their peers without intermediary network servers. It changes the existing centralized pattern of website, returning to "loose communication" in which users determine their own requirements. It reproduces the original idea of early Internet developers who wanted to creat a super free network that users have everything controlled. However, the abuse of this application gives rise to troubles bothering business entities.
Major Risks of P2P Usage
- P2P application needs to consume large portion of bandwidth, greatly affecting the bandwidth allocation of the whole network, further, resulting a low productivity. According to research of an industry institute, P2P has dominated the whole Internet, with 50-90% of traffic coming from the application.- Vulnerability usually appears because of some deficient codes or software programs in P2P. For example, a mistakenly processed freaky Web request in eMule can launch an attack by exploiting the vulnerability. Since web requests are usually Post data or Get data, it gives attacker chances to cause eMule breakdown by simply sending a freaky request and further control the eMule host.- Data leakage in a P2P application comes from two sources. One is that the open file-sharing makes personal documents to be freely shared to peers as every file saved in P2P resources folder will be publicly accessible. The other source is scanning and inspection from P2P Internet management agency or software developers. Both the two entities have strong desire to get user information as much as possible, and scanning open ports of P2P is obviously a fine resolvement.- P2P is now being taken as the main tool of Trojan and virus distribution. Trojan can hide in a P2P shared file and install itself into the user system when the legitimate file is downloaded or opened, leading user computer hacked by attackers.
Control Policy Over P2P
Anchiva provide time and volume-based control policy.
- Control P2P based on application protocol or specific feature.Choose policies to allow access based on hours of the day and days of the week. For example, limit users to P2P for an hour during lunch time.- Allow P2P access, but limited to certain volume quota.- Allow filtering and blocking to URL-based malicious sites. Directly filter and block malware downloaded in partition to make organization free from virus, Trojan, and spyware attacks.
