MS06-042 - When is a patch not a patch?

When is a patch not a patch? Apparently it is when you apply the patch to systems that don't have current Service Packs installed.

Recently released MS06-042 Microsoft patch for Internet Explorer was found to cause crashes on some systems, specifically Windows 2000/SP4 + IE6/SP1, and Windows XP/SP1 + IE6/SP1. Although SP4 is the latest SP available for Windows 2000, XP can be updated to SP2 to avoid a problem.

In the Windows 2000 environment, IE6 may unexpectedly exit after applying MS06-042. Temporarily while an update is being crafted, users can disable HTTP 1.1 using the following Microsoft instructions:
